Camden Eye Center and Lions Low Vision Clinic
The Low Vision Rehabilitation clinic at the Camden Eye Center provides vision rehabilitation services for those individuals who have impaired vision due to an eye disease that cannot be corrected by medical or surgical treatments, and conventional glasses or contacts. In general, an individual is often told, “nothing more can be done to improve their visual function”.

Causes of Visual Impairment
The most common causes of vision loss are macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. However, other conditions that can cause vision loss include congenital and hereditary causes such as Retinitis Pigmentosa and Stargardt’s Disease, a type of macular degeneration that typically surfaces before the age of 20, along with trauma. Although the majority of the visual impairments affect adults, it can also affect children and adolescents.

What happens when you lose your vision?
Vision loss can be devastating, since it can lead to the loss of independence. Visually impaired individuals may have difficulty performing tasks of daily living such as reading or signing checks. They may also have problems seeing faces or walking around unfamiliar areas. They can have trouble with recreational activities such as seeing playing cards. Certain individuals find that light, either indoor or outdoors, is bothersome due to glare sensitivity. Because of these difficulties, vision loss can decrease an individual’s self-esteem, and can lead to depression.
How We Can Help
Our mission at the Camden Eye Center Low Vision Rehabilitation clinic is to help the visually impaired by maximizing and enhancing their remaining vision. We are able to accomplish this by using specialized optical devices such as magnifiers, high power reading glasses, and telescopes. Other means include using non-optical devices, counseling and education, training by a rehabilitation specialist, and referrals to special social agencies. A comprehensive evaluation and assessment by our low vision specialists will allow us to determine the appropriate means to help individuals achieve their rehabilitation goals, regain their independence, and ultimately improve their quality of life.
The Camden Eye Center Low Vision Rehabilitation Services Program is supported by:
- Lions Clubs International Foundation
- Lions Clubs of District 16C
- Bank of America, a trustee for the Lydia Collins deForest Charitable Trust
